Flames
In shade of night I watch some folks
Sit round about the fire
Warmth and beauty holds the flame,
Servant of man, all know thy name.
The night grew dark, the hour late
And folks agreed! It’s time for bed.
Bring here some water, bring a spade
Let’s put to sleep our faithful mate.
In moments it was over and done,
Flames, beauty, warmth, together gone.
No grievous sighs, no teardrops shed
Drowsy they all went off to bed.
Oh, could the flames within the heart,
Be quenched like flickering fire,
To rise against the starlit shore,
Roll forth, like smoke to be no more.
